Waste to Feedstock

Turning complex waste into gasification-ready feedstock

Mana turns residual waste into Engineered Waste Feedstock: a defined, certified input for waste-to-fuel plants.

A trillion-dollar energy source, buried in the world's waste

The world produces more residual waste every year. Shipping, aviation and industry need far more low-carbon fuel than is made today. One can supply the other.

The residual waste challenge

0Bt

global municipal waste per year by 2050, up from 2.6 Bt in 2022

0Mt

refuse-derived fuel produced globally is landfilled or burned for low-value heat

0Bt

CO2e emitted every year from global waste management, rising to 1.8 Bt by 2050

The clean energy challenge

0Bt

CO2 emitted by shipping every year, nearly 3% of global emissions

0Mt

potential bio-methanol demand for shipping by 2040, against 2.2 Mt produced today

0Mt

EU demand for sustainable aviation fuel per year by 2050, against under 0.3 Mt today

Engineered Waste Feedstock

A new value chain, ready to scale. Mana makes the link that was missing.

Waste sourcing NG Nordic

Waste is highly variable

Film, cardboard, textiles, wood, metal and rubber: industrial residual waste changes with every source, site and season. Moisture, ash and chlorine swing with it. No standard tells a developer or lender whether a given stream will perform in a plant.

Engineered Waste Feedstock Mana

Waste streams are matched to the gasifier

Mana qualifies each waste stream, sets the gasifier's operating window and engineers a feedstock recipe that fits it. What comes out is Engineered Waste Feedstock: the same every time, and ready for gasification.

Gasification to syngas NextChem / MyRechemical

Gasifiers need predictable feedstock

Consistent input gives consistent syngas, and a plant that runs as designed.

What is gasification? The feedstock is heated to over 1200 °C with too little oxygen for it to burn. Instead of ash and flue gas, it breaks down into syngas: hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

Syngas to methanol Mitsubishi Gas Chemical / Johnson Matthey

Syngas is converted to circular methanol

Over a catalyst, the hydrogen and carbon monoxide combine into methanol, which can also be processed further into sustainable aviation fuel.

What is methanol? CO + 2H2 → CH3OH. A liquid fuel that is stored and bunkered much like today's marine fuels, and that ships already run on.

Product offtake Equinor

Loaded, and off to sea

The methanol goes to shipping and, as SAF, to aviation. Without a reliable feedstock there is no reliable syngas, and no scalable waste-to-fuel value chain. That is the problem Mana solves.

Market

Market forces are converging around waste-to-fuels

Offtake demand is locked in by regulation, feedstock is abundant and cheap, and the first plants are moving from study to steel.

Offtake market

Shipping and aviation are locking in long-term demand for low-carbon fuels

  • 144 Mtglobal methanol demand by 2031, from 120 Mt today
  • 6%SAF required in EU aviation fuel in 2030, rising to 20% in 2035

Feedstock market

Waste is a large, growing and low-cost feedstock that needs to be made reliable

  • 3.86 bn tof municipal waste a year by 2050, about one third still dumped or uncollected
  • 6.5 Mtof refuse-derived fuel traded across European borders every year
  • 40 Mtmore residual waste treatment capacity the EU needs by 2035
